At the end October 2010, the Obama Administration announced Mike Schultz as the final member to serve on the Alaska Farm Service Agency State Committee. The State Committee members oversee the activities of the agency, including carrying out the state agricultural conservation programs, resolving appeals from the agriculture community and helping to keep producers informed about FSA programs.
Mike has farmed with his brother in Alaska since 1983. They produce oats, barley, and canola. They also grow native grasses for seed production and brome hay.
Mike served on the Alaska Farm Bureau board for over 20 years and served as its president for 4 years. He served on the Delta/Greely School Board for 13 years, and served on the Alaska Farmers Coop, Inc. board of directors for 15 years. He lives in the Sawmill Creek area at Delta Junction, Alaska with his wife Sandi.
I am excited that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has completed the appointments to the State Committee by naming Mike Schultz of Delta. Mike joins Arthur Keyes, a vegetable farmer from Palmer, and Susan Willsrud, who co- manages a three acre organic farm and education center in Ester.
All three of these individuals will work with USDA to help farmers and ranchers build and maintain successful operations that produce the safe, nutritious food supply that America needs while spurring economic development in our nation's rural communities. They bring the experience and passion necessary to help continue the Obama Administration's efforts to rebuild and revitalize rural America.
These three experienced Alaskan farmers will help us achieve our goals of helping Alaskan farmers and ranchers be financially successful and produce safe and nutritious food for Alaskans.
