In Shelby County, Ohio, resides John Lenhart a producer, a firm believer, and long-time advocate of conservation and the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Being a farmer and landowner, he believes CRP is a "win-win" effort for all involved and the right thing to do.
John stated, "It is our duty to maintain and properly care for the land, not only for today, but for future generations." This is a "win" for the farmer and for all citizens downstream. This, in turn, equates to cleaner water, reduced sedimentation and enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitats.
Of the nearly 600 acres he owns and operates, John has 80.7 acres enrolled in various CRP practices. These include trees and grasses and filter strips. Also, John has acres in grass waterways and has enrolled acreage in the Wildlife Habitat Buffer practice. John practices additional conservation measures which include; a diversion and Water and Sediment Control Basin, combination practice to detain runoff, development of a shallow water wildlife area, seeding a natural grass prairie, no-till, conservation tillage, and tree plantings. Approximately 72 acres were recently certified in the "American Forest Foundation Tree Farm System". John was also honored as the Shelby County Conservation Farmer of the year in 2004.
John encourages students and adults to participate in the numerous educational opportunities offered by the local Soil and Water Conservation District. He not only helps to secure funding, but also volunteers to make these events successful.
John, his wife Sharon, and daughter Rebecca are very dedicated conservationists. CRP has assisted immensely with their efforts!
