Weekend Getaway in Buffer-protected Lake

Each time a fisherman, boater, or swimmer sets out onto Oakwood Lake, their outing is more safe, enjoyable, and productive thanks to Brett and Frank Williamson. The Williamson brothers' farmland is located on a large peninsula that extends into the middle of the lake, one of eight that make up South Dakota's Oakwood Lakes State Park. The land also has several linear wetlands that drain into the lake.

The Williamsons enrolled the entire peninsula in a combination of general and continuous CRP practices. Marginal pastureland buffers prevent contaminants from entering the lake, while field windbreaks installed on the peninsula protect fragile soil from wind erosion. In addition, the Williamsons' property now has a patchwork maze of cattail sloughs, native grasses, and trees, addressing all of the needs for several wildlife species.
