Reid Tuohino is a full-time farmer and county commissioner in Hamlin County, South Dakota. His acreage was enrolled in CRP in 1997 under a 15-year contract. Mr. Tuohino "absolutely loves" CRP and wants to keep his acreage in the program. He also would like to enroll his mother's acreage in the near future. Mr. Tuohino has devoted 148 acres to the CRP wetland restoration practice and about 15 acres to the Farmable Wetlands Program. His largest field of CRP is adjacent to the Gertson Slough.
"CRP was a perfect fit for my operation on this cropland during the wet years of the 1990s," said Mr. Tuohino. "At this point in my operation, I would prefer to have everything in CRP." In addition to the economics, Mr. Tuohino values the added benefits his CRP acreage has brought to wildlife, particularly pheasants, deer, and waterfowl.
Chad Switzer, a Pheasants Forever biologist, worked with Mr. Tuohino to develop the wetland practices. Mr. Switzer calls Mr. Tuohino's acreage a "perfect" example of CRP.
