FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2010 Perennial Crops Must Be Insured Before November 20TH

(MADISON, WISCONSIN), November 5, 2009-
Wisconsin producers have until November 20, 2009 to sign up for 2010 Non-insured Assistance Program coverage for perennial crops. This deadline applies to perennial crops such as apples, grapes, blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, pears, cherries, honey, and maple sap, which are not covered under Federal crop insurance.

Crops must be covered by crop insurance or NAP to be eligible for the 2008 Farm Bill Disaster Programs such as the Supplemental Disaster Assistance Program (SURE), Livestock, Honey Bees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP), or the Tree Assistance Program (TAP).

NAP is designed to cover losses caused by damaging weather conditions. If losses are in excess of 50 percent, payment would be received. Losses are generally determined by the percentage of loss compared to the producer's actual yield history. Eligible production losses are paid at 55 percent of the established value for the crop.

"Producers who currently have NAP coverage or who are interested in coverage need to keep accurate production records," said Brad Pfaff, State Executive Director of Farm Service Agency.

The November 20 deadline also applies to persons who have a 2009 policy and need to renew their coverage for 2010.

Other upcoming NAP deadlines are:
  • January 2, 2010 crop reporting deadline for honey and maple sap
  • March 15, 2010 deadline for application closing date for spring seeded crops, such as spring seeded vegetables.

NAP coverage is only available for crops where coverage is not available under the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIC).

Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office to obtain NAP coverage or for additional information on NAP prior to the November 20 deadline.
