CRP Target of Wyoming Walk-In Area Program

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department initiated a Walk-In Area Program in 1998 to improve public access for hunting on private lands. Land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is often targeted for enrollment in the Wyoming Walk-In Area Program.

The Walk-In Area Program offers annual lease payments to private landowners on a per acre basis. The private landowner determines which species will be hunted and the periods during the hunting season when access will be allowed.

Access is for foot traffic only and is strictly enforced by area game wardens. As a side benefit, sportsmen have been very good at helping enforce the rules as well.

The general public has been very appreciative of the increased access to private lands and landowner cooperation. Access atlases are published annually showing enrolled tracts and are available at hunting license sales agents throughout the state.
