The Configuration and Change Management procedures and controls are implemented to ensure that:
- A system cannot be changed or introduced without proper justification and approval
- A system operates correctly
- Change requests are addressed according to appropriate procedure
- Changes to system functionality are known
- Changes do not adversely affect the security of the system
- Changes do not adversely impact another functioning production system.
The methods, processes and tools used to provide change and configuration management for an organization can be considered as the organization's Configuration and Change Management System (CM System). An organization's CM System holds key information about its' product development, promotion, deployment and maintenance processes, and retains the asset base of potentially re-usable artifacts resulting from the execution of these processes. The CM System is an essential and integral part of the overall development processes.
