USDA Designates 16 Michigan Counties as Primary Natural Disaster Areas Based on 3 Triggering Disaster Events

This Secretarial natural disaster designation allows the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters through emergency loans. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts. FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.

Triggering Disaster 1: Frost and freeze that occurred during April 2 through May 30, 2021.

Application Deadline: Sept. 19, 2022

Primary Counties Eligible: Antrim, Grand Traverse, Leelanau and St. Joseph

Contiguous Counties Also Eligible:

Indiana: Elkhart and LaGrange

Triggering Disaster 2: Excessive rain that occurred during June 26 through July 16, 2021.

Application Deadline: Sept. 19, 2022

Triggering Disaster 3: Drought that occurred from May 5, 2021 and continuing.
