Katina Hanson began serving as the acting director of the Office of External Affairs for the Farm Service Agency in early July 2017. In this capacity, she oversees the offices of Executive Correspondence, FOIA, Legislative Affairs, and Public Affairs. She also serves on the Executive Committee for the USDA Women in Agriculture Employee Group and chairs the FSA’s Women in Ag Chapter.

Previously, Hanson served as chief of staff to the Associate Administrator for Policy and Programs; a position that she held since September 2015.

Hanson has a strong background in farm programs and policies at FSA, working previously as senior policy analyst in the Office of the Deputy Administrator for Farm Programs and as the agency’s team lead for the Biofuel Infrastructure Partnership. She has also served in various positions with the Conservation and Environmental Programs Division at FSA, including acting deputy director, branch chief of the Planning and Analysis Branch, and national program manager for the Emergency Conservation Program.

Before joining FSA, Hanson worked for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service as a resource conservationist on the watershed planning staff in the Pacific Islands Area Office. She also worked for the State of Hawaii as the water quality management planner. Earlier in her career, Hanson worked on environmental education with Boston’s inner city schools as an AmeriCorps Volunteer.

Hanson’s career accomplishments are built on a strong educational foundation where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in rangeland ecology and management from Texas A&M University, and a Master of Science degree in environmental management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. She is also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute.

A native of Dickinson, Texas, Hanson now lives in Manassas, Virginia with her husband and two children.
