Jerry Sonnenberg was appointed by the Trump Administration to serve as the state executive director of the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Colorado in May 2025.

Prior to his appointment, Sonnenberg most recently served as a county commissioner after serving in the Colorado Legislature for 16 years. During his tenure as a lawmaker, Sonnenberg was chairman of numerous committees including both House and Senate Agriculture Committees as well as the Water Resources Review Committee and the Capital Development Committee which oversaw all of the state’s land and building assets. Sonnenberg also served as President Pro Tem of the Colorado Senate and received numerous awards for defending and advocating for agriculture and rural Colorado. He was inducted into the Colorado Ag Hall of Fame in 2023.

Sonnenberg’s years of public service include serving on numerous boards and organizations. His passion is to develop leaders in the agriculture community. After the economic downturn in 2008, he led a group that redesigned the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Program.

Sonnenberg is a Colorado native, born and raised on the eastern plains. He has been farming and ranching in northeastern Colorado his entire life. He still lives in his childhood home near Sterling and still farms with his family on their diversified Centennial Farm where they raise corn, wheat, milo, millet, and hay along with cattle and operate a small feedlot. Sonnenberg and his wife, Vonnie, have four grown children and 10 grandchildren.
